In real world 'in the field' we've gotten a mile or so with FRS, and a 'how far can we go' test with a 5W GMRS pair gave us six miles (me in back yard, wife in car, using decent roof antenna on car).

These are probably one or two watt radios, but due to the inverse square law, you only double your range when you multiply your power fourfold, so the range won't be much better than FRS. Keep in mind that GMRS is *not* an unlicensed 'free' service like FRS or MURS. We just paid our five year renewal fee to the FCC, $85 (a GMRS license is for your entire family). If you get caught operating without a license, you will lose your radios, and something like $10,000 per offense.
