I'm trying to make a simple Zelda clone in Unity, and I was wondering how rooms in a dungeon should be organized? The two way I'm thinking are either: -Set up the entire dungeon in the inspector ahead of time so that the whole thing is created when the scene loads. Renaissance Equalizer Free there.

-OR create rooms on demand (with instantiate) as the character moves around the dungeon. I feel like it's an awful lot of extra gameobjects hanging around if I go ahead and make the entire map in the inspector ahead of time. But this seems to be the easier way. If I instantiate my rooms on demand, I guess I would need to make a few room prefabs and then use some other variables to populate the rooms appropriately. You might be interested in reading some of these blog posts: One option is to make the entire dungeon a scene, with each room being a GameObject with all its contents as child objects. However, make each room deactivated to start. Then you can have a global manager object that activates and deactivates rooms (and everything in them) as the player moves through the dungeon. If you want to get fancy you don't need to activate the entire room object and its children, instead you can make each room keep a list of monsters/triggers (which implement a Doesn'tDoAnythingWhenPlayerIsNotThere interface) and only activate their scripts.

I've done the rooms-as-prefabs thing for a game concept that needed it (non-euclidean layout), but that's probably more trouble than just deactivating scripts. Can you give an example of what 'lots' would be? I'm just really starting unity development now. I have an issue that makes me ask this: I tried making about 200 cubes being the child of an empty game object, but saving the prefab took ridiculous amount of time: 40 seconds!!! I was shocked!! Otherwise unity and some modern games preform fine on my laptop. I was theorizing all the components on each one caused the lag, but really I have no idea.
