This reminds of of the USB to Parallel cables people used to use that gave strange things. Are you using laptops and need serial adapters? I really can't +1 this enough. We also buy Dell laptops specifically because of the E-legacy adapter. Our industry requires every field fire tech to have serial ports and those USB to serial adapters are ALL crap. I don't care which driver you use.
However, if I had to pick the 'most reliable' one of the bunch(and I'm pretty sure we've tried all of them), it would be the FSU409 Belkin adapter. To get it to work on 64-Bit systems, I had to find a different manufacturer's driver that had the same chip used in the Belkin model. I don't remember where I got it, but the filename is: U232-10. I've had horrid experiences with USB to serial and USB to parallel cables under Windows 7. I've had them not work at all; work with Device A, but not Device B; and work with Devices A and B, then stop working for No Good Reason. By the time you're done, one of the options above will likely be less expensive from a TCO perspective - especially once you factor in the cost of antiacid and ibuprofen.
